Spell Casting: How Do You Close A Sacred Circle?

I often get asked about how best to close the Sacred Circle after you have finished spell casting.

I thought it worthwhile writing this up and posting it here :-)

When you cast the Sacred Circle you put three scoops of salt stirred into water. And then you the practitioner visualizes all negative thoughts and vibrations evaporating.

You then point the athame at the physical circle boundary and you will walk around the circle visualizing a beam of energy or light flowing from the end of the athame onto the circle boundary.

This is generally done clockwise.

Taking down or dismantling the sacred space involves the same procedure as creating it.

This time everything is done in reverse.

You begin in the North, pointing the Athame at the Northern Quadrant visualizing the Guardian returning to where it came from.

You continue moving counter clockwise dismissing the Guardians by moving widdershins (counterclockwise) around the circle, reciting in the appropriate quadrant what you generally recite.

Once you have dismissed the Guardians you then 'take up the circle' beginning in the North.

And you point the Athame at the circle boundary line withdrawing the psychic energy which was earlier placed there.

All items, tools etc used during the ritual also need to be put away unless it is an area used exclusively for ritual.

I trust this clarifies how best to complete your spell casting.

Wicca Beginner's Guide

Here's is an article I wrote in response to a request for a Wicca Beginner's Guide:

Wicca is one form of witchcraft.

And many Wiccans are not actually practicing witches.

So you can be wiccan and not practice the craft. And you can be a witch and not be wiccan. And of course you can be both.

Wicca is a relatively new pagan religion that traces back to Gerard Gardner. Who due to his frustration with both Christianity and Ceremonial Magic (which uses psychic skills through rituals, traditions and the laws of nature) that was at that time the only 'alternative' offering, prompted him to create something different.

Some suggest that it came about in 1951 and other texts claim it was in 1954 - suffice to say it was in the 50's that Wicca came into being.

Wiccans are taught to think for themselves, take responsibility for their lives and live by the Wiccan Rede which has the 'golden rule' of "An ye harm none, do what ye will"

A lot of Wiccans are attracted to The Craft because it drawns on and strengthens their personal power.

They learn to create consciously outcomes that bring themselves and others that given them permission to cast on there behalf, joy.

Wicca very much has a "live and let live" philosophy. There is room for everyone and for everyone's personal belief system.

Most Wiccans believe it is unethical to impose their beliefs on others, let alone tell them how to worship.

Wiccans also know the power of belief - and that what you believe will happen in life will in fact be the outcome you experience.

That 9 times out of 10 we are creating unconsciously - and that may then mean we are creating what we don't want. As we are busy caught up in our emotions about something - and that emotion/feeling is sending out an energy wave that then brings back in like your experience.

Wiccans recognize that life is a mirror - and that it is possible to focus on what you do want - and so it becomes.

As stated the Wiccan Rede is very much the Wiccan Golden Rule. It reads as:

Wiccan Rede

Bide the Wiccan laws ye must, in perfect love and perfect trust.

Live and let live - fairly take and fairly give.

Cast the Circle thrice about to keep the evil spirits out.

To bind the spell every time, let the spell be spake in rhyme.

Soft of eye and light of touch - speak ye little, listen much.

Deosil go by the waxing moon - sing and dance the Wiccan Rune.

Widdershins go when the Moon doth wane, and the werewolf howls by thr dread wolfsbane.

When the Lady's Moon is new, kiss the hand to Her times two.

When the Moon rides at Her peak, then your heart's desire seek.

Head the North wind's mighty gale - lock the door and drop the sail.

When the wind comes from the South, love will kiss thee on the mouth.

When the West wind blows o'er, the departed spirits restless be.

Nine woods in the Cauldron go, burn them quick and burn them slow.

Elder be ye Lady's tree - burn it not or cursed ye'll be.

When the Wheel begins to turn, let the Beltane fires burn.

When the Wheel has turned to Yule, light the log and let Pan rule.

Heed ye flower, bush and tree - by the Lady blessed be.

When the ripping waters go, cast a stone and truth ye'll know.

When ye are in dire need, hearkin not to other's greed.

With the fool no season spend, or be counted as his friend.

Mind the threefold law ye should - three times bad and tree times good.

When misfortune is enow, wear the blue star on thy brow.

True in love ever be, unless thy lover's false to thee.

Eight words the Wiccan Rede fulfill, an ye harm none, do what ye will.

The main thing to take out of this as a Wicca Beginner's Guide is that Wiccan's very much have a live and let live philosophy and come from a true, loving, open, hearted space where they believe anything is possible and it is about working WITH the energies of the universe.

Blessings

What is Paganism and being a Pagan Mean?

I often get asked about what is Paganism and what constitutes being a pagan.

I find Wikipedia a great source of information. Here are some snippets I took to help you understand what the word Pagan and Paganism really means.

Incidently (or maybe not so) the growth of Pagans and Pagan religions is at an all time high at this point in time.

Remember too that whilst it is accepted by many that witches and pagans are synonomous. That Witchcraft exists in ALL religions - not just Pagan ones

Paganism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: "Both 'pagan' and 'heathen' have historically been used as a pejorative by adherents of monotheistic religions (such as Judaism, Christianity and Islam) to indicate a disbeliever in their religion. 'Paganism' is also sometimes used to mean the lack of (an accepted monotheistic) religion, and therefore sometimes means essentially the same as atheism. 'Paganism' frequently refers to the religions of classical antiquity, most notably Greek mythology or Roman religion, and can be used neutrally or admiringly by those who refer to those complexes of belief. However, until the rise of Romanticism and the general acceptance of freedom of religion in Western civilization, 'paganism' was almost always used disparagingly of heterodox beliefs falling outside the established political framework of the Christian Church. It has more recently (from the 19th century) been used admiringly by those who believe monotheistic religions to be confining or colourless.

Christianity itself has been perceived at times as a form of paganism by followers of the other Abrahamic religions[3][4]because of, for example, the Christian doctrine of the Trinity, the celebration of pagan feast days[5], and other practices [6] - through a process described as "baptising" [7]or "christianization". Even between Christians there have been similar charges of paganism levelled, especially by Protestants[8],[9], towards the Roman Catholic and Orthodox Churches for their veneration of the saints and images.

Pagan religions

The pagan religions are divided into two great groups: the American Paganism and the European (or classic) Paganism.

* Ancient Greek religion
* Ancient Near East Paganism
* Celtic polytheism
* Baltic paganism
* Finnish paganism
* Germanic paganism
* Paganism in the Eastern Alps
* Slavic paganism
* Egyptian Paganism

Neopaganism

In another sense, as used by modern practitioners, Paganism is a polytheistic, panentheistic, or pantheistic religious practice, often nature-based. Most Pagans consider themselves to be religious, however some others use the term for a form of Atheism, Agnosticism, or philosophy. Neopaganism includes reconstructed religions such as Hellenic polytheism, Celtic Reconstructionist Paganism, and the many Germanic revivals such as Ásatrú, Heathenry, Norse paganism and Theodism. Due to the fact that Reconstructionist religions are polytheistic revivals and elaborations based on surviving cultural practices, many Reconstructionists prefer to be called Pagans, not Neopagans. It might best be assessed that they inhabit a grey area between Pagan and Neopagan.

Also categorised as Neopagan are religions such as Forn Sed, Neo-druidism, Longobardic Odinism, Lithuanian Romuva, and Slavic Rodoverie that also claim to revive an ancient religion rather than reconstruct it, though in general the difference is not absolutely fixed.

Modern eclectic traditions such as Discordianism, and Wicca and its many offshoots are Neopagan, although Wiccans and Wiccan-influenced Neopagans may also refer to themselves simply as "Pagan".

Modern nature religion

Many current Pagans in industrial societies base their beliefs and practices on a connection to Nature, and a divinity within all living things, but this may not hold true for all forms of Paganism, past or present. Some believe that there are many deities, while some believe that the combined subconscious spirit of all living things forms the universal deity. Paganism pre-dates modern monotheism, although its origins are lost in prehistory.

Do You Think You Were Born A Witch?

I often get emails from people claiming that they are a second, third, fourth generation witch.

As if they were born as a witch

And conversely I have other people emailing me saying they don't think they have the 'special powers' of a witch as they weren't born a witch.

I want to dispell that myth now.

NO-ONE is "born" a witch.

ANYONE can successfully practice Witchcraft.

Now I do not wish to give offence to those who do have generations of witches in their families.

I'd suggest that the more applicable way to describe it is that you were born open to strengthening your gifts of conscious creation because members of your family have been doing it from generation to generation.

You see we ALL have natural gifts for conscious creation.

EVERY single one of us.

What differs between person to person is:

a) the degree of receptivity to the concept that we can consciously create for ourselves (aka practice magick)

b) the amount of practice and experience we have doing that.

So if you are reading this and you are someone who is wondering "Do I have 'the gift' for witchcraft?"

Yes you do!

You ALL do.

And whilst you might not have come from a family or community environment that is open to such concepts or practices - there is nothing to stop you from opening yourself up to it and seeing how magick can work for you in your life.

Well in fact there might be ONE thing that could stop you...yourself ;-)

Never Divine Against Another's Free Will - Rule of Three!

I received this letter for a member of our community that I wanted to share with you - whilst protecting their identity.

It is a great reminder of the importance of NOT divining against another's free will. The Law of Three - Click Here for more info on it - does come into play - every time!

Dear Ms. Arabella Jolie,

I have received many of your emails talking about love spells. I've been a witch at that time for about four years. The reason I decided to follow the wiccan faith was at first desperate for love in my life.

Not just anyone to love me but, to gain the favor of a particular person, the father of my children.

I too became a witch because I fell in love with the love that the goddess had to offer.

How ever in due time I became to understand the importance and the depth of what it means to be a witch.

I understand the great power that comes along with being a witch which frankly scared the living pants off of me.

When I did spells to help me keep my home and it worked ( I had to fight in court). It was great but too, kind of scary.

The love spells were the real kicker. I understand the 3 fold law but I was so desperate to have that man, I didn't care what happened. I bound him too me: two weeks later I got pregnant.

I did a lust spell on him. He wouldn't leave me alone but it wasn't a good thing all we did was argue because we clashed as we were not meant to be together.

Because of the lust spell, 3 days later our sex was so different. He was way too into me, it was as if he needed to me drink me in tearing me, biting me. I liked it but it was obvious to me that it was the lust spell that was making him do this.

Yes I had him, sometimes it was great, other times a living hell as he became controlling.

Sometimes he would say to me "I don't even know why I came". In my head I said, "I do".

I've found that a person has to have a strong sence of moral to be a witch, to be really responsible. In witch craft you're dealing with the good and bad and it takes a strong person to be able to balance that.

This is a letter from a real person - and it tells a real story of the heart ache they caused themselves by divining against another's free will in their desperate attempt to get love.

What I admire about this person is their ability to learn and not repeat mistakes - I take my hat off to them, and hope that you reading this do not end up learning the hard way (and it's pretty awful) like they did.

What IS a Book of Shadows?

What IS a Book of Shadows in Witchcraft?

"Book of Shadows" is the name given by modern witches to the book in which they write their rituals, invocations and charms. Witches copy from each others' books that which appeals to them, and things which have been learned from experience; so that in practice no two books are exactly alike.

An old rule of the covens, with regard to written material of this description, is that when anyone died his book was to be burned. The reason for this, from the old days, was to save embarrassment to the person's family. A written book was proof positive to accuse a person of witchcraft; and as the latter was popularly supposed to run in families, the discovery of such a thing might make the position of a witch's surviving relatives very difficult.

Such a writing is called a "Book of Shadows," because its contents can only be in this world's shadow of the realities of the Other World; the world of Magick and Beyond, the world of Gods and Spirits. Even so, I am told, do Freemasons regard their ceremonies; which they preserve "until time and circumstance shall restore the great originals."

Don't Worry So Much About Spell Casting!!!

Don't Worry So Much About Spell Casting in Witchcraft!!!

I remember the first time I cast a spell -- at least I remember worrying about the first spell that I cast!

The particular spell I chose had to be done at night in the light of a full moon. I remember that I had to either raise a chalice of a potion that I mixed together up to the moon for 15 minutes, or leave the open chalice beneath the moon's light for the night, retrieving it before daylight.

I chose the latter, as my neighborhood was rather congested, and I didn't want to attract attention. I followed the directions, feeling the power of the moon in the night and blessing the Goddesses for their gifts.

The next day before dawn, I retrieve the chalice and buried it per instructions for thirty days.

During those thirty days, I worried that I hadn't gotten the measurements correct for the potion, didn't have the chalice in exactly the right location to receive the moon's direct beams for the longest period of time, and on and on and on. I did exactly what I shouldn't do when spell casting -- I doubted myself.

My spell was cast with an open heart. That belief was all I should have been concerned about. The universe understands intention and meaning, and after a spell is cast, it is time to leave the rest to the universe.

The spells that I cast after that first spell were done have been more successful because I have cast them, then let them go, knowing that they will be fulfilled to the good of the recipient.

The Truth about Black Cats

The Truth about Black Cats in Witchcraft

Yesterday as I was driving, a black cat crossed my path. It crossed from right to left, and after it arrived to the other side of the street, it turned and stared into my eyes with its beautiful golden ones. I smiled back at it.

Bad luck? Good luck? I've heard so many things over the years!

My father used to claim he didn't believe in anything, but would make a u-turn to avoid the crossing of a black cat in front of him -- if it was crossing in the wrong direction. I can't remember if left to right was the wrong direction or vice versa. What pressure he must have been under to make the adjustments he had to make!

According to Wikipedia, "In Western history, black cats have often been looked upon as a symbol of bad omens although they are considered to be good omens in other cultures."

The truth is, what you believe is what manifests itself. Like attracts like. If you believe something is bad luck, then it becomes that for you.

I choose to see this beautiful black cat's crossing as a wonderful sign of good luck for me.

My Spell Didn't Work - So Witchcraft Doesn't Work!

"Witchcraft doesn't work - so my spell didn't work!"

I sometimes receive emails from people saying exactly that to me. They cast a spell yesterday, last week, a couple of weeks ago and it didn't produce the results they desired.

A couple of things I say consistently in response to that are:

The foundation of witchcraft is based on belief – believing that something you desire can and will happen. Like attracts like.

So the key is for you to be in that position of believing that you have the power to create what you desire, and the spell is your vehicle to do this. Otherwise, no amount of spell casting or magick making will work.

The power comes from the witch themselves – and everyone has that power.

When you decide you have that, then you will see spells working for you very quickly.

So that is how you begin, then when you have cast your spell...

If you are waiting (think fingers drumming on the table top, or waiting expectantly for it to materialize) for the spell to happen - your energy and focus is actually on that it 'might not happen' - whereas the key to casting a spell is to know with absolutely certainty it will happen for you and then you let it go. Waiting is not a factor as you know it is going to happen.

You do not cast a spell and then expect it to happen overnight or within a week - as again that is telling that your energy is on fear, anxiety and that it may not happen.

YOU are the key to the spell working - and it is about you having that certainty of what you want to have happen will - you can feel it as if it is your reality now.

I can promise you that when you fully, truly and deeply believe that what you want to have happen will - to the point that you can see, feel, touch and taste it - it will eventuate.

Because...LIKE ATTRACTS LIKE - the energy you put out will come back to you in like. If you focus on hoping, worrying or wondering if it will happen - you will stay in that state - it wont eventuate. When you trust, know and accept it as a certainty - so it becomes.

Protecting Your While Working With Witchcraft

Here's another little spell I wanted to share with you when working with magick and spell casting:

Protecting Yourself While Working With Witchcraft Magick

There are other things that you will need to do in order to keep yourself safe. All spell work should begin with some ritual to cleanse and protect the space you are working in. Some call this “Casting the Circle.” There are an endless number of variations on ways to prepare your space. Some are more complicated than other. The important thing is to find a ritual that works well for you personally. Below are two options, the first being more simple.

To Prepare and Cleanse a Sacred Space Spell I

Tools and Ingredients

Alter or Sacred Space
Salt

Step 1. Lightly sprinkle salt in a circle around yourself while speaking the following words: I consecrate this place/ for the Goddess within and without/ Only love and good can remain/ hate and evil are cast out.

To Prepare and Cleanse a Sacred Space Spell II

Tools and Ingredients

Alter or Sacred Space
Ceremonial knife
One white candle
One red candle
One blue candle
One black candle

Step 1. Imagine your space as a circle and set the candles around it. Place the white candle at a point facing East, the red candle at point facing South, the blue candle at a point facing West and the black candle at a point facing North. If you are using an alter, it is best to position it in the Northern corner.

Step 2. Carrying the knife, go to the Eastern corner and light the candle. Rise and remain facing East. You will now trace a pentagram (five-pointed star) in the air using the knife. Begin at the top of the pentagram and go down to the left, continuing until you return to the top. As you trace the pentagram, speak the following words: I invoke the East and Power of Air/ I call on the Breath of the Goddess/ Protect and guide me.

Step 3. Carrying the knife, go to the Southern corner and light the candle. Rise and remain facing South. You will now trace a pentagram in the air using the knife. Begin at the top of the pentagram and go down to the left, continuing until you return to the top. As you trace the pentagram, speak the following words: I invoke the South and Power of Fire/ I call on the Flame of Her spirit/ Protect and guide me.

Step 4. Carrying the knife, go to the Western corner and light the candle. Rise and remain facing West. You will now trace a pentagram in the air using the knife. Begin at the top of the pentagram and go down to the left, continuing until you return to the top. As you trace the pentagram, speak the following words: I invoke the West and Power of Water/ I call on the Water of Her womb/ Protect and guide me.

Step 5. Carrying the knife, go to the Northern corner and light the candle. Rise and remain facing North. You will now trace a pentagram in the air using the knife. Begin at the top of the pentagram and go down to the left, continuing until you return to the top. As you trace the pentagram, speak the following words: I invoke the North and Power of Earth/ I call on the Earth that is Her body/ Protect and guide me.

Step 6. Complete the ritual by stating, The circle is cast and consecrated/ in the name of the Goddess within and without

"Attract A New Love" Spell

I thought you might enjoy this witchcraft spell :-)

Sometimes, even when you are ready for a new relationship, things seem to need a little push.

Simple chance can play such an important part in helping a potential love come across your path. Using a spell to invite those with certain qualities into your life can be an effective way to attract new love, or try to attract the love of someone already in your life. The spell below does more than that by also putting energy into allowing others to see you for the attractive, unique and loving person you are.

To Attract a New Love Spell

Tools and ingredients

Alter or Sacred Space
5-6 inch circle of red fabric
Blue ribbon
Red candle
Dried lavender
Small piece of rose quartz
Small piece of copper (a coin, ring or piece of wire is acceptable)
Ylang Ylang oil
Orange oil
A plate

Step 1. After collecting the tools and ingredients, prepare your space according to your own ritual, or by lightly sprinkling salt in a circle around yourself while speaking the following words: I consecrate this place/ for the Goddess within and without/ only love and good can remain/ hate and evil are cast out.

Step 2. Light the red candle and think for a moment about the type of person you want to attract into your life. Select three qualities that you want them to have, for example honesty, strength and sensuality. If you already know who you are trying to attract, think of their name and visualize them. Then consider the best aspects of yourself and try to think of the three things you most want others to see in you, for example, intelligence, enthusiasm and grace.

Step 3. Place the plate on the alter and set the red fabric circle on it. Take a pinch of the dried lavender and hold it in your clasped hands. Inhale the aroma of the lavender while speaking these words: My heart is open and ready for love/ may the Goddess bless my new journey.

Step 4. Rubbing your hands together, allow the lavender to sprinkle onto the red fabric circle.

Step 5. Place a few drops of the Ylang Ylang oil onto your hands and then begin to rub the oil into the piece of rose quartz while speaking the following words at least three times (insert the qualities of type of person you wish to have in your life): Bright One inside and around me/ let one with ______, ______, and ______ come into my life!

Alternative. If you already know the person whose love you are trying to attract, use this incantation instead: Bright One inside and around me/ if it will be for the good of all/ Let ______ and I see each other with open hearts and open minds/ that love may begin anew.

Step 6. Place the piece of rose quartz onto the red fabric.

Step 7. Place a few drops of the orange oil onto your hands and rub the oil into the piece of copper while speaking the following words at least three times (insert the three things you most want others to see in you): You, who are all things beautiful and true/ let me feel you inside of me/ always remembering the _______, _______, and _______ that exist in me.

Step 8. Place the piece of copper onto the red fabric.

Step 9. Take the red candle and hold it above the fabric, allow one drop of wax to fall on the items gathered below for each of the following sentences: In your name, Goddess, I am ready for love/ Let those with _______,________, and _______ come into my life/ Let all see the ______, _______, and _______ inside of me/ By my will, so mote it be!

Alternative. If you already know the person whose love you are trying to attract, use this incantation instead:

In your name, Goddess, I am ready for love/ Let ______ and I see each other with open hearts and open minds / Let him see the ______, _______, and _______ inside of me/ By my will, so mote it be!

Step 10. Gather up the circle to form a pouch. Use the blue ribbon to close it tightly with seven knots. Keep the pouch with you, tied around your neck or waist, until your spell has accomplished its goal.

A Happy Home Spell

I am a great believer in your home being your foundation to your
own wellbeing.

In today's modern world we have so much going on in our lives -
with our jobs, our relationships, our family, our health, our
finances, OUR SELVES!

That sometimes you might be feeling like a juggler that truly could
do with about 3 more pairs of hands!

When all else is not peaceful on the home front it can be extremely
hard to concentrate on anything else.

Sometimes more than anything, you need to have a peaceful home and
a family (or flatmates) that don't argue.

This is where magick and witchcraft can help:

Now the ideal is to perform a HAPPY HOME spell before you move into
a new place - believing that it is easier to prevent trouble than
fix it.

AND you can still get powerful results from a spell cast when you
might be right in the midst of strife.

In fact a favorite spell of mine is the:

Basil Happiness Spell
*********************

I especially like this one because it has the added benefit of
attracting financial abundance as well - you see basil is the herb
of positive abundance.

First up:

1) Buy a new broom yourself (and discard any old ones) and use this
new broom to sweep the floors of any old negative energy hanging
around (this broom MUST be new - to bring in positive new
experiences).

2) Grow Basil in your garden, around the house

and/or

3) Place pots of fresh basil by your front entrance and around the
perimeter of your home

and/or

4) If it's not possible to grow basil - then place fresh basil in a
vase in a prominent spot in your kitchen, replacing it weekly or as
soon as it starts to spoil.

This Basil will draw into your house joy, harmony, tranquility,
cooperation and peace.

And also be aware that YOU TOO must have the right and matching
energy and focus of a desire to have a happy, harmonious home - do
not project the responsibility onto others.

Remember LIKE attracts LIKE.

So cast this spell and YOU also be what you are asking for :-)

Peace

The Power of Crystals In Witchcraft

Hi there

How much do you know about the powers of quartz crystals in relation
to witchcraft?

These are one of the most universal and powerful crystals.

And I am referring to CLEAR quartz crystals (pink ones are
wonderful for LOVE).

Clear quartz crystals empower whatever they are kept in contact with.

Therefore if you are the proud owner of a set of Tarot Cards, Runes
or any other divination methods, as well as having a special cloth
to wrap them with - store a clear quartz crystal within that bundle.

AND/OR

You can attach a clear quartz crystal to your wand to enhance it's
power and effectiveness.

AND/OR

Wear quartz crystal around your neck or sleep with it under your
pillow to enhance, access and increase your own personal power.

AND/OR

If you do feel the need to have extra loving energy with that - you
can also use a pink quartz crystal - which opens up the energy of
love within yourself and as I say often - LIKE ATTRACTS LIKE - it
supports you bringing more loving situations into your life.

If you have no other crystal in your possession, I do encourage you
to go to your nearest New Age store (off or online) and choose one
(or more...).

Remember to cleanse them before you go to use them.

Peace

Arabella
